ICANN hosts special meeting Oct. 19 to 21Add to September 27, 2007 ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) announced yesterday that it has partnered with the Taiwan Network Information Center (TNIC) to host a special regional meeting in Taipei, Taiwan from October 19 to 21, 2007. ICANN's special meeting will be called "Toward the New Era of the Internet" and will include various discussions on Internet security and the challenges it presents to governments, hosting providers and end-users. The meeting will also underline the importance for a migration to IPv6 because of the depletion of widely-used IPv4 IP addresses. ICANN will also discuss its overall progress on implementing internationalized domain names. Paul Twomey, ICANN's president and CEO said "ICANN, the TWNIC and the global Internet community are discussing some of the most important issues impacting the Internet since its creation." Twomey added "this meeting is an opportunity for technical communities, Internet businesses and policy makers from the Asia-Pacific region to come together and share thoughts and ideas on how we can move forward together." "ICANN is also about to launch a technical evaluation of the impact IDNs will have, and if all goes well, internationalized domain names could be available sometime next year," said Twomey. Additionally, ICANN recently launched a public consultation on a key report from ICANN's Generic Names Supporting Organization. Add to Source: The WHIR
