New submarine cable connects the Pacific Rim to the U.S.
Phase One of the most ambitious submarine fiber optic cable in the world is now complete. It directly
connects mainland China, the United States, South Korea and Taiwan. Verizon today announced the completion
of its Trans-Pacific Express fiber optic cable system. With more than 11,000 miles of fiber optic undersea
cable, this will play a driving role in international telecommunications and broadband Internet service in
the Asia-Pacific region.

Zend launches annual Zend/PHP Conference
IT solutions provider Zend announced says that it kicked off its fourth annual Zend/PHP Conference,
the world's largest gathering of the PHP community and for companies using PHP technology to
build business-critical Internet applications. To be held September 15 to 18 at the Santa Clara
Convention Center in Santa Clara, California, the Conference will see the gathering of the largest
software companies, innovative web start-ups and leading-edge developers from more than thirty
countries.

Report: no one is immune to downtime
According to uptime monitoring service provider Royal Pingdom, high-volume launches, BIND and DNS server failures, Internet
infrastructure failure and defective third-party software were some of the many reasons Web servers went
completely offline in the first six months of this year. According to the online report, "no one is immune to downtime,"
citing Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and Apple that have each made the list, while also noting that sometimes entire parts of
the Internet itself "simply break and isn't available for some period of time, sometimes as much as two to three
hours."

SmarterStats software getting better
On Friday, IT-management software developer SmarterTools has released SmarterStats 4.x, the latest
version of its analytics software. The new tool provides Web site traffic statistics, data mining,
geographic mapping, spider and bot detection, along with a Web interface with Silverlight dynamic
charting. According to the company, SmarterStats 4.x can differentiate between automated Spider
and Bot traffic from actual user visits.
