Global email spam levels still low
Only ten days since web hosting provider McColo (the alleged host to some of the biggest criminals and e-mail
spammers on the Internet) went offline, analytics firms across the globe have found that the international
volume of e-mail spam has dropped by as much as 75 percent and is still staying low as of now. After closely investigating McColo since early July, the Washington Post's Security Fix blog found
that the San Jose host was likely hosting "some of the most disreputable cyber-criminal gangs in business
today," including child pornography, anti-virus scams and malicious software, which has stolen banking
and credit card information from more than half a million people.

Intel launches its new Core i7 CPU

was a lavishly arranged function in Mumbai yesterday. Prakash Bagri, Director of Marketing for Intel South

Authorities shut down Web hosting company McColo
On a global basis, email spam now is down about 75 percent since Nov. 11, when a Washington Post investigation
led Internet service-providers Global Crossing and Hurricane Electric to shut down for good San Jose, California
Web hosting provider McColo. The Post says McColo also hosted child pornography. However, it's
still unclear if the hosting firm will be held responsible for the crimes of its clients. Mark Rasch, a former cyber
crime prosecutor for the Justice Department and managing director of FTI Security Consulting in Washington, D.C.,. said
Web hosting providers are generally not liable for illegal activity carried out on their networks, except in cases
involving copyright violations and... child pornography.

Verizon customers offline for more than 18 hours
A major power failure at Verizon in Rondebosch, a suburb of Cape Town, South Africa, left thousands
of people unable to access their websites on Nov. 1st, after the hosting provider's generator failed to
kick in, according to numerous reports over the weekend. IOL (Independent Online), a local publication
in South Africa, said its news site was "hard-hit by the crash" and even popular SMS chat applications
like M-Xit were unavailable for most of the day, leaving "thousands of people unable to communicate with
others."
