Microsoft to launch high-performance Windows

At the Microsoft TechEd event this week, Microsoft has released the Visual Studio 2005 Team System, Web Services Enhancements (WSE) 2.0 and the Office Information Bridge Framework 1.0 Beta. New features in WSE include a policy framework, enhanced security model, message-oriented programming model, and support for multiple hosting environments.

Tim Berners-Lee critical of STLDs
Tim Berners-Lee, the founder of the World Wide Web, condemned the introduction of sponsored top-level domains (STLD) this week at the 13th annual international World Wide Web conference, according to reports. Berners-Lee is critical of nine STLDs that are currently under review by ICANN (ICANN.org), the organization responsible for overseeing the domain name system.

MCI upgrading 17 data centers
MCI announced on Wednesday that it is enhancing 17 of its data centers in the US, a move designed to offer its customers a more robust environment for application hosting. Currently, MCI's "Standard" and "Premium" data centers offer colocation services and its "Smart" data center facilities offer managed hosting. MCI said that with the enhancements, customers will have access to a tiered set of data center capabilities, providing optimal flexibility.

Global Crossing chooses 200 Paul
Colocation provider eXchange @ 200 Paul (e200paul.com) announced on Monday that it has added telecommunications carrier Global Crossing (globalcrossing.com) as a new customer. The carrier will be moving to eXchange @ 200 Paul's San Francisco facilities where it will provide a full suite of voice, capacity and converged IP services including voice over IP, IP transit, IP VPN and IP video services to its customers.

Guidelines set for .eu domain registry
Domain names in the .eu top-level domain will be available to the public on a first-come, first-served basis from April 2005, according to the consortium responsible for the .eu registry. Eurid asbl/vzw, a legal entity registered in Belgium, has revised its timetable for setting up the registry, following publication by the European Commission on April 30 of operating rules for the domain.

The Planet leases Dallas data center
Managed Web hosting provider The Planet Internet Services has signed a 10-year lease for new data center space at 400 S. Akard Street, a tier-one carrier hotel in downtown Dallas. The facility is 21,000 square feet, of which 18,000 is raised floor for IT infrastructure. According to Lance Crosby, chief operating officer of The Planet, the company has added 50 new engineers in anticipation of the facility's opening, which he said houses up to 12,000 servers.

Commercial websites taken hostage
Jay Broder, president of CSI Mid-South, also known as Card Solutions International, said the company received an e-mail in early April that threatened to cripple his site if he didn't send money. Broder assumed the e-mail, and another one sent the next morning, were idle threats among the spam he receives daily.

Sasser virus author arrested
In what the company called a "coordinated multinational law enforcement effort," information provided to Microsoft by informants led local authorities to arrest the 18-year-old unnamed resident of Rotenburg, Germany, only a week after the original Sasser virus had been released. Microsoft's $5 million fund for rewarding informants for leads on virus attacks has snagged its first success with the arrest of a man in Germany who has confessed to the release of the Sasser worm, the software giant said Saturday.

Sasser worm spreading rapidly
The Sasser worm started spreading late Friday. As of Saturday afternoon, it had not racked up the crowd of compromised computers that its predecessors have been able to claim. If it weren't for the worm's poor programming, such a limited spread could have indicated that computer users are becoming more diligent about heeding warnings and patching their systems.
