Cisco acquires Actona Technologies
Cisco Systems agrees to pay $ 82 million in cash to acquire Actona Technologies,
a small start-up that
manages data across geographically separate offices.
The networking giant announced Tuesday that it will integrate Actona's technology
into its branch office product that currently combines a WAN (wide area network)
connection with network security, IP voice communications, business applications and
video services. Actona's technology will enhance that offering by expanding the
functions of Cisco's branch office access routers.

A major security hole discovered in Microsoft's Internet Explorer last week has
become a golden marketing opportunity for alternative browsers such as Mozilla and
Opera that are unaffected by the flaw. To avoid falling prey to a concerted attack
aiming to steal log-on information and passwords, some security experts advised to
switch to another browser
as the best immediate fix.

growing adoption of online shopping throughout Europe.
"These are the healthiest post-Christmas online sales figures

City of Munich adopting Linux open source
The city of Munich has confirmed that its year-long trial is a success and that
it will
adopt Linux and the open source
model for its PCs. The change will officially take place on July 1, and 14,000
desktops will permanently migrate to the open-source platform. The pilot was
run using Novell's SuSE Linux and IBM products. But the eventual contract--which
could be worth tens of millions of euros--will be put out to tender.

shows that numbers of web facing computers
found by the Web Server report have increased by 12% in the past 6 months.

Domain name registrations hit new record
According to a report released by VeriSign, more than 4.7 million new domain names
were registered during the first quarter of 2004. That's the highest quarterly
figure for new domain registrations in the history of the Internet. In total, more
than 63 million domain names are now been registered, approximately one for
every 100 people in the world today.
Internet domain name registration is the highest it's ever been
at any time in
the Internet's history, surpassing even the heights that were seen during the
Internet "bubble."

According to research and analysis firm Netcraft's June Web Server Survey,
Apache once again came out way on top,
holding 67.22 percent of the Web server
market, up from last month's 67.05 percent. The gains represented an increase in
aggregate totals from 33,892,817 to 34,710,235.

RegistryPro launches .pro domain
Domain registrar RegistryPro, a subsidiary of Web hosting provider Hostway
and operator of the .pro top-level domain, announced on Tuesday the
launch of the .pro domain,
the Internet's first top-level domain since 2002. The .pro extension
is only available to licensed doctors, lawyers and accountants who must first
submit verification of their professional status before being able to register a
.pro domain.
